Dolomites Mountain Huts: 10 Best Rifugi for Lunch

Adrenaline Adventures

There is nothing quite like hiking through the Dolomites and sitting down at a wooden table with mountain views for a plate of steaming canederli. Rifugi β€” mountain huts β€” are the soul of these mountains. Places where the effort of the climb is rewarded with authentic flavours, breathtaking panoramas and a warmth of hospitality that only exists at altitude.

From San Vigilio di Marebbe, in the heart of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, you can reach some of the finest mountain huts in the Dolomites. Here are our 10 favourites for lunch, with everything you need to know: hiking time, signature dish, average cost and whether you need to book.

1. Rifugio Fanes β€” 2,060 m

Rifugio Fanes sits at the heart of the Fanes plateau, surrounded by Dolomite walls and Alpine meadows that take your breath away. Its location inside the Nature Park makes it one of the most beloved huts in the area.

  • Time from San Vigilio: 2h-2h30 (via Pederue)
  • Must-try dish: Speck canederli with melted butter β€” the Rifugio Fanes version is legendary
  • Average lunch price: EUR 15-22
  • Reservation: Recommended in August, especially weekends

Rifugio Fanes is also reachable by jeep service from Pederue (paid). Perfect if you want to enjoy lunch without a demanding hike, or for families with young children.

2. Rifugio Lavarella β€” 2,042 m

Just minutes from Rifugio Fanes, Lavarella offers a more intimate, cosy atmosphere. The hut has been run by the same family for generations, and you can taste that care in every dish.

  • Must-try dish: Schlutzkrapfen (spinach and ricotta half-moon pasta) with butter and parmesan
  • Average lunch price: EUR 14-20
  • Reservation: Recommended on August weekends

3. Rifugio Sennes (Senneshutte) β€” 2,116 m

The Sennes plateau is one of the most remote and enchanting places in the Dolomites. The hut serves exceptional home-style cooking in a setting of rare beauty, far from the crowds.

  • Time from San Vigilio: 3h-3h30 (via Pederue and Fanes) or 2h from Passo Furcia
  • Must-try dish: Goulash with polenta β€” the perfect flavour after a long walk
  • Average lunch price: EUR 15-22
  • Reservation: Not strictly necessary (less crowded)

  • Must-try dish: Porcini mushroom tagliatelle β€” simple, fresh, perfect
  • Average lunch price: EUR 12-18
  • Reservation: Recommended in peak season

5. Rifugio Scotoni β€” 1,985 m

Tucked into a spectacular position at the foot of the Lagazuoi, Rifugio Scotoni is reachable from Capanna Alpina or Armentara. The views towards the Tofane and Lagazuoi are simply incredible.

Practical Tips for Rifugio Dining

Timing

Most rifugi serve lunch between 11:30 and 14:30. Arriving at 11:30 means finding a seat without trouble and getting the best service. After 13:00 in August, expect to wait.

Payment

Many rifugi accept cash only. Always carry enough notes and coins. Some larger huts accept cards, but don't rely on it.

What to Expect

Rifugi are not city restaurants. The menu is limited, service times can be longer and the atmosphere is informal. But that is precisely the charm β€” slow down, enjoy the views and savour dishes cooked with love at 2,000 metres.

The Perfect Combination

Book the zipline in the morning, descend to a rifugio for lunch, and spend the afternoon exploring the trails of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park. A perfect day in the Dolomites.
