December in the Dolomites is pure magic. The mountains dress in white, Christmas markets sparkle in the squares, the Krampus parade on the evening of the 5th and every corner of these valleys tells a story of tradition and warmth. If there's a month when the Dolomites reach their atmospheric peak, it's this one.
At Adrenaline Adventures, we live in San Vigilio di Marebbe and December is when everything lights up — literally and figuratively. Here's the complete guide to an unforgettable December in the Dolomites.
Christmas Markets in Full Swing
In December, South Tyrol's Christmas markets are at the height of their magic. The wooden stalls are all open, lights twinkle and the scent of mulled wine fills the air.
Markets Not to Miss
- Bruneck: along the main street of the old town, intimate and authentic
- Brixen: the oldest in South Tyrol, on the magnificent Cathedral Square
- Sterzing: the most romantic, in the illuminated medieval street
- Bolzano: the largest, in Piazza Walther — perfect for a day trip
- Merano: with its Habsburg charm along the Passirio
Christmas markets are generally open from the last week of November until 6 January. The best time to visit is during the week — weekends (especially December 8th) are very crowded. In the evening, with the lights on, the atmosphere is even more enchanting.
Skiing in December
The Plan de Corones resort is in full operation in December, with all pistes open and generally excellent conditions thanks to both natural and artificial snow.
Advantages of Skiing in December
- Before the masses: until mid-December the slopes are less crowded than Christmas-New Year
- Fresh snow: December snowfalls often offer optimal conditions
- Short but intense days: fewer daylight hours but top snow quality
- Affordable ski pass: pre-Christmas rates are still good value
Krampus: The Evening of 5 December
5 December is one of the most anticipated evenings of the year in South Tyrol. The Krampus — demonic figures with carved wooden masks, furs and chains — parade through the villages accompanying St. Nicholas.
Where to See the Krampus
- San Vigilio: intimate parade in the village centre
- Bruneck: one of the largest and most spectacular parades in the area
- Dobbiaco: atmospheric setting with the lake as backdrop
- San Candido: deeply-felt tradition with strong local participation
Winter Snowshoeing
December is perfect for snowshoeing. The snow is fresh, the trails silent and the scenery postcard-perfect.
Recommended Routes
- San Vigilio forest trail: easy, 2 hours, perfect for beginners
- Fanes Plateau: for experienced hikers, unforgettable panoramas
- Val di Tamores: hidden valley, hardly anyone around, pure magic
For December snowshoe outings, start early: the sun sets by 4:30pm. Bring a spare head torch, warm layered clothing and always inform someone of your route. Days are short but the low sun on snowy mountains creates some of the most beautiful light of the year.
Festive Menus
