Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park: Hiking Guide

Adrenaline Adventures

Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park is one of the most precious gems of the Dolomites. Spanning over 25,000 hectares of unspoilt landscape, this protected park surrounds San Vigilio di Marebbe and forms part of the UNESCO Dolomites World Heritage Site. From the turquoise shores of Lake Braies to the lunar plateaus of Senes, here is everything you need to know to explore it at its best.

Why Fanes-Senes-Braies is Special

Established in 1980, the park protects a unique alpine ecosystem comprising three distinct geographical areas: the Fanes Groups, the Senes Plateaus and the Lake Braies zone. It forms part of the UNESCO Dolomites system, recognised in 2009 for its outstanding geological and landscape value.

The Dolomites have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park is one of the nine recognised systems, thanks to its unique rock formations and extraordinary biodiversity.

The Best Hikes

1. Lake Braies — The Jewel of the Dolomites

Lake Braies (Pragser Wildsee) is arguably the most photographed alpine lake in Italy. Its emerald-coloured waters, framed by the rock face of Croda del Becco, create a postcard-perfect setting.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Duration: 1h30 (lake circuit)
  • Elevation gain: 50 m
  • Starting point: Lake Braies car park (from San Vigilio, 40 min by car)
  • Tip: Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds, especially in summer

2. Fanes Waterfalls — Natural Spectacle

The trail to the Fanes waterfalls is one of the most rewarding hikes in the area. Water cascades through Dolomite rock creating spectacular scenery, particularly after spring rains.

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Duration: 3h (return trip)
  • Elevation gain: 400 m
  • Starting point: Pederue (reachable by shuttle from San Vigilio)
  • Tip: The trail is particularly beautiful in June when snowmelt feeds the waterfalls

3. Senes Plateau — Lunar Landscape

The Senes Plateau offers a completely different landscape: karst expanses, sinkholes and rock formations reminiscent of a lunar surface. It is one of the least visited areas of the park, perfect for those seeking solitude.

  • Difficulty: Moderate-hard
  • Duration: 5-6h (full circuit)
  • Elevation gain: 700 m
  • Starting point: Pederue or Fanes Refuge
  • Tip: Bring plenty of water as there are no sources along the route

4. Fanes Refuge — The Classic Hike

Fanes Refuge (2,060 m) is the classic destination for a half-day hike from San Vigilio. The trail passes through conifer forests and alpine meadows, with views of some of the most iconic Dolomite peaks.

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Duration: 4h (return trip)
  • Elevation gain: 500 m
  • Starting point: Pederue
  • Tip: The refuge offers excellent traditional cuisine, perfect for lunch

Combine the Fanes Refuge hike with the Adrenaline Adventures zipline for a complete day of adventure. Zipline in the morning, hike in the afternoon — or the other way round.

5. Piz de Plaies — 360-Degree Panorama

Piz de Plaies (2,027 m) is San Vigilio's local mountain and offers one of the finest panoramas in the Dolomites. From the summit you can see the Tofane, Pelmo, Marmolada and Sella Group.

  • Difficulty: Easy-moderate
  • Duration: 3h (return trip)
  • Elevation gain: 450 m
  • Starting point: San Vigilio centre
  • Tip: Perfect for sunset, but bring a torch for the descent

Park Wildlife

Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park is home to rich and varied alpine wildlife. With a bit of luck and patience, you may spot:

Marmots

Marmots are the undisputed stars of the park. From June to September, it is easy to hear their characteristic alarm whistle on the plateaus. They can be observed at close range (while keeping a respectful distance), especially in the early morning hours.

Golden Eagles

The golden eagle nests in the park and can be spotted soaring above the ridges. With a wingspan of over 2 metres, it is a majestic sight. The best vantage points are the Senes and Fanes plateaus.

Other Wildlife

  • Chamois — frequent on rock faces
  • Red deer and roe deer — in forests at lower altitudes
  • Black grouse — visible especially in spring
  • Alpine salamanders — near watercourses
