July is the beating heart of summer in the Dolomites. Days stretch to sixteen hours of sunlight, temperatures hover between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius, and every trail, every mountain hut, every outdoor activity is fully accessible. If you have been waiting for the perfect moment to experience the Dolomites, this is it.
Why July Is the Perfect Month
The Dolomites in July offer conditions that are hard to match at any other time of year. Snow has melted even above 2,000 metres, alpine meadows burst with wildflowers, and the sky delivers that deep, intense blue that makes every photograph look retouched. This is the month when nature reaches its absolute peak.
Temperatures are ideal for physical activity: refreshingly cool in the morning (around 14-16°C), pleasantly warm in the afternoon (22-28°C), and perfect in the evening for dining outdoors. Summer storms, when they arrive, are brief and concentrated in the late afternoon — simply plan accordingly.
Start your day early, between 7 and 8 AM. You will have the trails to yourself, perfect lighting for photos, and plenty of time to return before any afternoon thunderstorms. Weekdays are even quieter than weekends.
Best Hikes for July
Prato Piazza (Plätzwiese)
A high plateau at 2,000 metres that looks like something from a painting. In July, the meadows are a carpet of alpine flowers with sweeping views of the Braies Dolomites. The main trail is wide and mostly flat, making it ideal for families.
Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park
The wildest nature park in South Tyrol. The trails connecting the Fanes, Lavarella, and Senes mountain huts cross lunar landscapes and alpine lakes of an impossible emerald green. We recommend at least two days to explore it properly — learn more in our guide to the Fanes-Senes-Braies Park.
Sass de Putia
A challenging but rewarding hike. The summit at 2,875 metres offers a 360-degree panorama across the Dolomites. In July, the ascent is completely free of snow and conditions are optimal.
Zipline at Full Capacity
In July, our Dolomites zipline operates at full capacity with all runs available. The experience of flying over the Val Badia valley with mountains bathed in summer sunlight is something that stays with you forever.
The long days allow us to offer runs right up to sunset — an experience we strongly recommend. The colours of the Dolomite sky as the sun goes down, seen from 100 metres up, are beyond description.
In July, we recommend booking at least 3-4 days in advance, especially on weekends and during the Maratona dles Dolomites week. Demand is high and time slots fill up quickly.
July Events in the Dolomites
Maratona dles Dolomites
The Maratona dles Dolomites is the most famous cycling event in the Alps. Held on the first Sunday of July, it brings thousands of cyclists to ride the most iconic Dolomite passes. Even if you are not participating, the atmosphere is electric, and the passes closed to traffic offer unique photo opportunities.
Cultural Festivals
July is packed with cultural events throughout the Val Badia: open-air concerts at mountain huts, traditional Ladin music festivals, and food fairs where you can taste the best of South Tyrolean cuisine. Every village has its own events calendar — ask at your hotel or the local tourist office.
Tips to Avoid the Crowds
July is peak season, but with a few strategies you can enjoy the Dolomites in peace:
- Start early: at 7 AM the trails are nearly empty
- Choose weekdays: Monday to Thursday you will find fewer people everywhere
- Explore secondary valleys: Val di Tamores or Rudo Valley are hidden gems
- Book in advance: restaurants, mountain huts, and activities fill up fast
- Avoid viewpoints between 10 AM and 2 PM: that is when crowds peak
What to Pack
For July in the Dolomites, prepare light but versatile layers. A lightweight waterproof jacket is essential, as is high-SPF sunscreen — the sun at altitude is far more intense than you might expect. Comfortable hiking boots, a hat, and sunglasses complete the essential kit.
