Lake Braies: Complete Guide + Adventures

Adrenaline Adventures

Lake Braies is the most photographed lake in the Dolomites — and quite possibly in the entire Alps. Its emerald-green waters, the iconic wooden boathouse and the towering walls of Croda del Becco create a scene that looks like it belongs in a painting. But Pragser Wildsee is far more than a postcard: it is the starting point for extraordinary hikes, a place of utter peace in the early morning hours, and the perfect base for a day that combines nature with pure adrenaline.

Here is everything you need to know to plan your visit from San Vigilio di Marebbe.

How to Get There from San Vigilio

Lake Braies is approximately 40 minutes by car from San Vigilio di Marebbe (35 km). The route is straightforward: follow the Puster Valley eastwards to Monguelfo (Welsberg), then turn right into the Braies Valley. The road is scenic and well signposted.

  • By car: SS244 towards Brunico, then SS49 towards Monguelfo, then follow signs for Val di Braies
  • By bus: line 442 from Monguelfo (limited frequency in summer — check timetables)
  • Summer shuttle: from the P1 car park at Ferrara di Braies, running July to September

Arrive before 9:00 AM, especially in July and August. The lakeside car park (approximately EUR 8 per day) fills up very early, and from around 10:00 AM the road is often closed to private vehicles. The free shuttle from the Ferrara car park is your best option in high season. Bonus: early morning light creates perfect reflections on the water for stunning photographs.

Walking Around the Lake

The classic loop around Lake Braies is an easy walk suitable for everyone, including children and people with limited mobility (the initial section is accessible). The full circuit is about 3.5 km and takes roughly 1.5 hours with photo stops.

What You Will See

  • The wooden boathouse: the most iconic spot, perfect for sunrise photography
  • Southern shore: flat path with views of Croda del Becco
  • Small waterfall: a hidden gem on the far side of the lake
  • Northern shore: slightly narrower trail with unique photographic angles

The path is well maintained and signposted. Comfortable shoes are sufficient (hiking boots are not necessary), but bring a light jacket even in summer — at 1,496 m the temperature can change quickly.

Rowing Boats on the Lake

The famous wooden rowing boats are an unmissable experience. They cost approximately EUR 15 for 30 minutes and are available from May to October, weather permitting. No advance booking is needed, but expect queues in high season.

Rowing on Lake Braies is a unique experience: the silence is total, the water is so clear you can see the bottom, and the mountains surround you in every direction. For couples on a romantic getaway, it is an unforgettable moment.

Croda del Becco Hike

For those seeking a greater challenge, the trail to Croda del Becco (2,810 m) starts from Lake Braies and is one of the most rewarding hikes in the Dolomites.

  • Elevation gain: approximately 1,300 m
  • Duration: 4-5 hours (one way)
  • Difficulty: experienced hikers (alpine trail with exposed sections)
  • Season: July to September

The route climbs through the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, passing Rifugio Biella and offering ever-expanding panoramas over the Puster Valley and the Sesto Dolomites. The summit rewards you with a 360-degree view that is simply breathtaking.

Croda del Becco is a serious alpine hike: you need proper hiking boots, layered clothing, sufficient water and a good level of fitness. Always check the weather forecast before setting out and start early in the morning. For more accessible walks in the area, see our guide to easy walks in the Dolomites.

Best Instagram Spots

Lake Braies is a photographer's paradise, but some angles are more photogenic than others:

  1. The boathouse at sunrise: arrive before 7:00 AM for the best light and no crowds
  2. The wooden jetty: classic but always effective, especially with morning mist
  3. The eastern shore: less visited, offers the reflection of Croda del Becco in the water
  4. The elevated trail: halfway around the lake, an aerial perspective that few people know about

Lake Braies + Zipline: The Perfect Day

The winning combination for an unforgettable day in the Dolomites? Zipline in the morning, lake in the afternoon. Here is the ideal schedule:

  • 8:00-10:30: zipline session in San Vigilio — 7 breathtaking runs with Dolomites views
  • 11:00: depart for Lake Braies (40 minutes)
  • 11:45-12:30: lunch at one of the restaurants along the Braies Valley
  • 12:30-15:00: walk around the lake, rowing boats, photography
  • 15:30: return to San Vigilio

This combination gives you both the pure adrenaline of the zipline and the contemplative peace of the lake — two completely different but complementary experiences.

Lake Braies in Winter

Lake Braies is spectacular in the cold months too. From December to March, the lake freezes completely, creating a fairytale landscape with snow-covered mountains all around.

  • Winter walk: the lakeside path is passable even in snow (bring crampons)
  • Cross-country skiing: groomed trails in the Braies Valley, perfect for beginners and advanced skiers
  • Snowshoeing: routes through the surrounding forests
  • Christmas market: in December, the lake hosts an atmospheric festive market

Winter is also the best time to photograph the lake without crowds: you will find very few visitors and an almost surreal silence.

Practical Tips

  • Parking: EUR 8/day at the lake, free at shuttle car parks
  • Facilities: bar, restaurant and toilets at the main car park
  • Accessibility: the first section of the path is suitable for pushchairs; for pushchair-friendly hikes choose Lake Dobbiaco instead
  • Dogs: allowed on a lead
  • Weather: at 1,496 m it can feel cool even in summer — always bring a jacket
