The Dolomites are not just mountains, trails and adrenaline. This region holds an extraordinary cultural heritage that manifests through museums unique in the world, where art, history and the mountains meet in surprising ways. Whether you are looking for an alternative on a rainy day or simply want to add a cultural dimension to your holiday, the museums of the Dolomites offer experiences that stay with you just as powerfully as a zipline descent. And sometimes, combining the two creates the perfect day.
Messner Mountain Museum: Reinhold Messner's Network
Reinhold Messner — the legendary South Tyrolean mountaineer, the first person to climb all fourteen eight-thousanders without supplementary oxygen — created a network of six museums scattered across South Tyrol. Each museum is dedicated to a specific theme linked to mountains and humanity, and each deserves a visit. Here is the complete guide.
MMM Corones — The Crown on the Plateau
Where: Plan de Corones (Kronplatz), 2,275 m a.s.l. Theme: Traditional mountaineering and the great walls
The most spectacular museum in the network, designed by star architect Zaha Hadid. The building is literally embedded in the summit of Plan de Corones, with panoramic terraces offering a 360-degree view of the Dolomites, the Zillertal Alps and the Puster Valley. Inside, the history of the great mountaineering feats on the world's most famous walls.
- Access: cable car from Bruneck or San Vigilio
- Visit duration: 1-2 hours
- Don't miss: the panoramic terrace carved into the rock with Dolomite views
MMM Corones sits on the same mountain accessible from the San Vigilio area. You can easily combine a museum visit with an adventure day — the cable car to Plan de Corones departs just minutes from our base. In winter it is one of the largest ski areas in South Tyrol.
MMM Firmian — The Headquarters
Where: Sigmundskron Castle, Bolzano Theme: The encounter between humans and mountains
Housed in the imposing Sigmundskron Castle, the largest castle in South Tyrol, this museum is the heart of the MMM network. - Don't miss: the view from the corner tower and the section on Dolomites UNESCO history
MMM Ripa — The Mountain Peoples
