Stroller-Friendly Hikes in the Dolomites

Adrenaline Adventures

Travelling with a baby or toddler does not mean giving up on the Dolomites. In fact, some of the most beautiful walks near San Vigilio di Marebbe are perfectly manageable with a pushchair. Flat terrain, compacted surfaces, breathtaking panoramas — all within reach of your wheels. Here are six routes we have personally tested and recommend to every family.

1. Prato Piazza (Plätzwiese)

Duration: approx. 45 minutes (loop) | Elevation gain: minimal | Surface: compacted gravel

Prato Piazza is probably the most iconic and accessible walk in the Dolomites. You reach it by car or shuttle bus from the Ponticello car park (Val di Braies). Once you arrive on the plateau at 2,000 metres, a world of green meadows surrounded by towering Dolomite walls opens up before you.

The main trail circling the plateau is wide, with a compacted surface perfect for any type of pushchair. Along the way you will find benches, picnic areas, and the Rifugio Prato Piazza with a panoramic terrace and baby-changing facilities.

Take the shuttle bus instead of driving: the road is narrow and parking is limited, especially in high season. The bus runs every 20 minutes and accommodates pushchairs without any trouble.

2. Armentara Meadows Walk

Duration: approx. 50 minutes (return) | Elevation gain: 50 metres | Surface: grassy path and gravel

The Armentara Meadows are one of the most photographed landscapes in South Tyrol, and for good reason. Rolling meadows stretching out with the Dolomites as a natural backdrop — like a living postcard.

The path crossing the meadows is suitable for pushchairs with large wheels or jogging strollers. The surface is grass with sections of compacted gravel. Start from the Armentara car park — bring snacks as there are no refreshment points along the route, but the views are worth every step.

3. Val di Funes — Meadow Path

Duration: approx. 40 minutes (return) | Elevation gain: minimal | Surface: gravel and tarmac

Val di Funes is famous for the church of Santa Maddalena with the Odle peaks behind it — one of the most celebrated images of the Dolomites. The meadow path starting from the village centre is perfectly flat and accessible.

Walk through flowering meadows with a constant view of the Odle group. The village offers several restaurants and cafes with family facilities, including baby-changing rooms and highchairs. Ideal for a relaxed half-day combined with a visit to the village.

Val di Funes is about 40 minutes by car from San Vigilio. We recommend going early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid traffic on the pass road and find parking easily.

4. Rio Gadera Riverside Walk

Duration: approx. 30 minutes (return) | Elevation gain: none | Surface: paved path

This walk starts directly from the centre of San Vigilio and follows the course of the Rio Gadera stream. The path is fully paved, flat, and shaded by trees — perfect on hot days.

It is the ideal route when you are short on time or when the weather is not cooperating. The sound of the water is soothing, children love watching the stream, and there are several benches along the way for a rest. From the path you can easily reach the restaurants and shops in the centre.

5. San Vigilio Village Loop

Duration: approx. 60 minutes | Elevation gain: 30 metres | Surface: tarmac and compacted gravel

The complete loop around San Vigilio is a pleasant walk that takes in the main landmarks: the parish church, the historic centre, the sports area, and the surrounding meadows with views of Plan de Corones.

The route is almost entirely on tarmac or compacted gravel, with a short section of gentle incline that is still manageable with a pushchair. Along the way you will find playgrounds for older children, bars, and restaurants. Perfect for your first day of holiday or an evening stroll.

6. Passo delle Erbe — Panoramic Path

Duration: approx. 45 minutes (return) | Elevation gain: 40 metres | Surface: compacted gravel

Passo delle Erbe (Würzjoch) at 2,003 metres offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Dolomites. The panoramic path from the pass car park follows compacted gravel, suitable for pushchairs with large wheels.

The view stretches from Sass de Putia across the Val Badia, with a horizon of peaks that takes your breath away. At the pass you will find the Rifugio Ütia de Börz with a terrace, toilets, and baby-changing facilities. We recommend an all-terrain pushchair for this route.

Practical Tips for Families

  • All-terrain pushchair: if you have one, bring it. Large wheels and suspension make all the difference on gravel paths
  • Baby carrier: keep one as a backup for trickier sections
  • Sun protection: the sun at altitude is very strong — hat and sunscreen even for the littlest ones
  • Water and snacks: not all paths have refreshment points nearby
  • Start early: morning is the best time — cooler, quieter, and children are better rested
